COSMIC Project Home

COmmunication, Social and Motor skills in genetic Conditions (COSMIC). Our team is examining language and social abilities in children ages 3-10 years with neurogenetic disorders involving chromosome 15. These neurogenetic conditions include Angelman syndrome (AS) and 15-duplication syndrome (15-dup). Because they are rare, these disorders are poorly understood; we know that many children with AS and 15-dup syndrome carry an autism diagnosis as well. Speech and language difficulties are central to these disorders, but not well understood, in part because of methodological and logistical challenges. In this project, led by graduate researcher Elise Taverna, we compare the autism presentation in children with idiopathic autism and children with AS and 15-dup, in an entirely-online study.  To learn more about the study, click the “participate” link!
